Panama Canal Expansion Presentation
February 18, 2014 - Atlanta, GA
Mr. Ron Kaufmann was invited to the Georgia Geo-Institute Chapter of ASCE in Atlanta, Georgia to give an after-dinner talk on geophysical applications for the Panama Canal Expansion Project.  About 50 engineers and scientists attended this joint meeting between the Georgia Geo-Institute and Southeastern Section of AEG.  Ron summarized the current state of the Expansion Project and presented mini-case histories of geophysical surveys carried out for the Project between 2006 and today.  The case histories demonstrate the successful application of geophysics to map faults, characterize engineering properties of subsurface materials, and identify geologic hazards and anomalies.

Acquisition and Analysis of Terrestrial Gravity Data
Available February 2013
Dr. Tim Long (Professor Emeritus at Georgia Tech) and Ron Kaufmann (President of Spotlight Geophysical Services) announce their new book: Acquisition and Analysis of Terrestrial Gravity Data.  Gravity surveys have a huge range of applications, indicating density variations in the subsurface and identifying man-made structures, local changes of rock type or even deep-seated structures at the crust/mantle boundary.   This important one-stop book combines an introductory manual of practical procedures with a full explanation of analysis techniques, enabling students, geophysicists, geologists and engineers to understand the methodology, applications and limitations of a gravity survey.   Filled with examples from a wide variety of acquisition problems, the book instructs students in avoiding common mistakes and misconceptions.   It explores the increasing near-surface geophysical applications being opened up by improvements in instrumentation and provides more advance-level material as a useful introduction to potential theory. This is a key text for graduate students of geophysics and for professionals using gravity surveys, from civil engineers and archaeologists to oil and mineral prospectors and geophysicists seeking to learn more about the Earth's deep interior.

The book can be ordered at Amazon.com or Cambridge University Press.

Spotlight Completes Seismic Survey of Panama Canal
November 22, 2010
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is conducting a geotechnical investigation along the footprint of a new bridge crossing the Panama Canal, north of the Gatun Locks, known as the Atlantic Crossing.  As part of the investigation, ACP requested that a geophysical survey be carried out along the proposed alignments to obtain the seismic P-wave and S-wave velocity structure of the subsurface. These data will be used to assess the engineering properties of geologic units to depths of 30 meters.  Spotlight teamed with ATI Panamericana, S.A., GeoView Inc., and Rodio-Swissboring Panama, S.A., to provide a comprehensive seismic investigation of the proposed alignments.  Over 4 km of seismic refraction and MASW data were acquired through extremely rugged jungle in the midst of Panama’s rainy season.  An additional 1.5 km of marine seismic refraction were acquired within the Canal itself.
